Repurposeful Art Walkthrough

This particular repurposeful piece was commissioned as a gift for someone “who adores purple”. There were no other parameters, so I had a lot of fun with this one! I began with these discarded tea bag covers and got to work on making the paper canvas.

After a 24-hour soak and a good blending, I had a nice purple pulp. I generally like to blend just enough to achieve a nice color but no more. I want the canvas to have a unique character, including little unblended bits and interesting flecks of color throughout.

Once I’ve wrung out as much water as I can from the paper pulp, I roll it out thoroughly with a rolling pin. I love the way the paper seems to “choose” what shape it needs to be! This is probably my favorite part of the whole process: I prefer to just let it happen, and see what delightful shapes I end up with. In this case, I ended up with three lovely and distinct shapes, so… it turned into a three-piece set!

And after the canvases are dry, I paint the backgrounds and adhere the canvases to them before applying the abstract designs with pen & ink. My pen tends to follow the hills and valleys of the paper, and often I like to spotlight the “flaws” and inconsistencies of the canvas. In this way, each piece is completely unique and somewhat driven by happenstance.

I was very happy with the end result! “Purple Pekoe” was a truly delightful experience, and I look so forward to discovering new repurposeful creations in the future.

Thank you for reading, and a very heart-felt thank you for supporting my art!
